Patient Experience FAQ

How do I schedule a new patient appointment with AAIC?

You may schedule a new patient appointment by calling your preferred office location, scheduling online through our website, or calling our scheduling number 866-983-2242.

Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?

As a practice, we do not require referrals. However, some insurance plans do require a referral prior to scheduling. VA patients do require a referral. We recommend contacting your insurance company directly to determine referral requirements or in-network status.

Do you offer televisit / telehealth appointments?

Yes, we offer televisits.  Some procedures or testing may require you come in to the office.

Can I switch my appointment to a different AAIC location?

Yes, you may visit different AAIC office locations. However, for patients receiving allergy shots, serum is typically stored at one location, so consistency is encouraged. Allergy shot serum can be transferred to another location upon request.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines or allergy medications before allergy testing?

Yes. We encourage patients to stop antihistamine medications 7 days prior to allergy testing. Please review our complete list of medications to avoid for specific details and timelines. Do not stop any medication that you cannot safely discontinue. If you have questions, please contact our office to discuss further.

What happens if I accidentally take antihistamines before my appointment?

It happens—and that’s okay. Please call us as soon as you realize the medication was taken. We may need to reschedule testing, or you may still be seen and have testing completed at a later date to ensure accurate results.

Can I still be seen if I forgot to stop my allergy medication?

Yes. We understand allergy season can be challenging. If medications were taken, you should still come to your appointment. Your provider can evaluate your symptoms, discuss a treatment plan, and schedule allergy testing for a later date if needed.

How long does allergy testing take?

Testing time varies by patient. The testing process itself is typically quick, with results available approximately 15 minutes later. Most visits last 2 hours, depending on the amount of testing required and provider discretion.

Will I get allergy testing at my first appointment?

Typically, yes. If no antihistamine medications have been taken, most patients leave their first visit knowing what they are allergic to and with an appropriate treatment plan in place.

What insurance plans does AAIC accept?

AAIC accepts most insurance plans; however, coverage varies. Please contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage or in-network status.

Does AAIC offer payment plans?

Yes! We are happy to provide payment plans. Please call our Billing department to discuss.

How do I pay my bill?

You may pay your bill online, at any office, by mail, or by phone.

How do I access the patient portal?

Once you provide your email address, you will receive a link to set up your patient portal account. You may access the portal at our website.

What should I use the patient portal for?

The portal can be used to review visit summaries, access school or work excuse notes, complete and review forms, review prescriptions  and message your provider with questions

How do I request a prescription refill?

You may request refills through the Patient Portal using our website or the Healow app or by calling the office and leaving a message for the care team. If refills are already remaining on your prescription, you may request those directly through your pharmacy.

Are allergy shot hours the same as regular office hours?

Not always. Allergy shot hours may vary from regular office hours. Please check with your specific location for current shot room hours. See all our locations here.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

New patient appointments typically last 60–90 minutes, as testing is often involved. Please bring a photo ID, an active insurance card(s), completed new patient paperwork , a medication list including dosages and frequency (if applicable), and any relevant medical records, (if applicable). You are also welcome to bring a book, tablet, or computer while testing is performed.

Who do I call with billing questions?

Our billing team is happy to help. You may contact them directly by phone or send a message through the patient portal or Healow app.

Can I get an allergy shot if I am sick?

We encourage patients to be feeling well at the time of their allergy shot. If you are experiencing fever, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, please wait until you are feeling better. It is okay to be a few days late on a shot. If you are unsure whether to receive your injection, please message us through the patient portal or call the office.

Do I need an appointment for allergy shots at AAIC?

You only need an appointment for your first allergy shot visit. This appointment includes education on how allergy shots work, how often to come for your shot, shot room hours, and what to do in the event of a reaction. After this initial visit, no appointment is required—you may come in during designated shot room hours.

Why do I have to wait 30 minutes after an allergy shot?

For your safety, all patients are required to remain in the office for 30 minutes after receiving an allergy shot. This allows our staff to promptly assist in the event of a reaction. You are welcome to bring a book, computer, or other activities during this time.

Why did I receive a bill after paying my copay?

Copays are required by most insurance plans at the time of your visit. However, insurance coverage varies, and you may receive an additional bill for services not fully covered by insurance, such as deductibles or coinsurance. Because insurance processing takes time, bills may arrive after your appointment. If you have questions, please contact the billing department or send a message online through the patient portal or Healow app.
